That’s a good question and of course everyone will have a different answer based on their lifestyle or interests. But in the winter it’s vitally important to be especially aware of how NOT taking care of your health can open you up to all sorts of maladies, including the flu, colds and a multitude of other winter induced blahs.
Getting older, I tend to view the importance of staying healthy as a much bigger priority. Things you may have once been able to get away with in your 20s and 30s, you suddenly find out you CAN’T anymore.
Everyone makes excuses as to why they can’t make the time to do something for the sake of their health each day but that’s only fueling the fire to stay unhealthy.
Like all bad habits, they can be reversed….it just takes WILLPOWER!
Just know that by not taking the proper steps to take care of your health NOW, will only create dire consequences down the road. So never take your health for granted. Remember, you only get one shot at it, in this life.
Here are some GREAT TIPS to help you get into the routine of living a healthy lifestyle!
While winter does, depending where you live, pose more restrictions in terms of exercise and outdoor activities, there are still many activities you can take part it.
It may be just as simple as incorporating a brisk 20 minute walk outside. Too cold you say? Plan to dress appropriately and you might also find taking a walk in colder weather is actually quite invigorating!
If you can’t bring yourself to venture into the great outdoors and have access to a treadmill, why not get into the habit of using it….instead of letting it simply collect dust in the corner. Don’t own a treadmill you say? Many cable networks such as FitTV have a myriad of programs where one can literally tune in every hour for exercise options to fit your needs, such as yoga, Pilates, or aerobics and it will certainly help to break up the monotony. If you’re lucky enough to have a membership at the gym or have access to a personal trainer, take advantage of it now…..don’t wait…get a head start on shedding those winter pounds. Combining both weight training and aerobic activity is an excellent way to get the best of both worlds and your body will thank you for it!
Other than that I’ve also been a strong advocate of taking in more fluids daily….but certainly avoid overloading with high sugar content beverages as they will do you more harm than good. Since we are in midst of the cold and flu season and to avoid gaining too many of those extra winter pounds, it’s always a good idea to eat more fruits and vegetables, choose leaner meats and fish and make a point to eat more high fiber multi-grain breads. But DO cut back on those empty calorie foods!
In addition, make a concerted effort to reduce stress. Take a honest inventory of your life and what you might be able to do differently….meditate … take time to reflect….change is good.
Break the cycle of doing NOTHING and focus on creating a healthier lifestyle today. The payoff will be tremendous and your efforts will put you on the right path to building a healthier immune system.
